Piper Creek, Red Deer

Another image from along one of the creeks in Red Deer. This time it’s an image from along Piper Creek in the Bower Woods just south of 32nd Street. The late day sun was just poking it’s way through all the trees in one tiny spot before it set for another cold night.

Waskasoo Creek, Red Deer

Filed under: Abstract, Ice, Nature, Winter — collin j örthner @ 4:16 am

I made this photo while looking down from the bridge over Waskasoo Creek in downtown Red Deer. I wish that the businesses along the creek would take it upon themselves to help beautify the downtown core of Red Deer by putting a bit of effort into cleaning up the creek, and keeping it clean, along the frontage of their businesses. It would be a nice statement to show that we care about the creek and the environs around us. The way it stands now it looks a lot like they feel it is more of a nuisance,  Bushes are cut down so people driving along the street can see their business better. I have seen so much neglect with garbage strewn all along the creek including shopping carts right next door to the business they belong to. Don’t they care at all? It would need to be a team effort and not just the once a year that citizens help to clean up along our creeks. Even the city does nothing about it. Do they not care about the impact on the environment all the garbage makes either? Do they not care about the unsightly look of it? It wouldn’t take that much effort by a team of workers, maybe summer student,s to make a serious impact on our immediate environment, and make a huge improvement on what our city looks like.

Dinosaur Provincial Park – again

Filed under: Nature, Panorama, Panoramic, Skyscape, Travel — collin j örthner @ 6:09 am

A couple more images from the same evening as the last post.

The first image is a multiple image stitched panorama. I am constantly amazed at how well CS5 can stitch together images! These clouds were clipping along at a pretty good pace and yet it joined them together with no signs visible of the work it did even though there was some movement of the clouds between each exposure.

Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta

A beautiful sunset in the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks, Alberta. Earlier in the evening a very large thunderstorm had passed through which left a few remnant clouds for us to enjoy as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Prairie Morning – Medicine Hat, Alberta

Filed under: Sound Recording — collin j örthner @ 7:14 am

I made this recording along a small prairie coulee which had a tiny creek. The wind was incessant and so I located a small cutbank along the creek and placed the microphones in the lee side of the cutbank to protect them from the wind. The wind is still very audible as it passes through the prairie grasses just a couple of meters above the microphones. Please wear headphones for best playback.

Peony

Filed under: Abstract, Plants, Travel, Zeiss — collin j örthner @ 5:16 am

A beautiful white peony growing in my sister’s yard in Lethbridge. I made this image last July while visiting Marlene and her husband Dave for the Canada Day holiday. Actually I think Brady was there too. Had a great time, as usual, visiting the foothills and Police Outpost Provincial Park on day trips.
