Monochromatic Colour

Filed under: Autumn, Hi Res, Ice, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, Winter — collin orthner @ 8:10 am

A gloomy morning in Red Deer County a few weeks back after some freezing rain and heavy fog. This is a colour image although you have to be really paying attention to see any colour at all. It’s amazing how creation can vary so dramatically from season to season, not just temperature, but colours. From the beautiful vibrant greens in spring and intense yellows in fall to this almost monochromatic winter. I call it winter because it looks and felt like it, but actually it was only halfway through fall this year.

WaterJ #206

Filed under: Abstract, GF2, Hand of Man, m4/3 — collin orthner @ 11:29 pm

I was exploring a bit with our glass water jug creating some abstract images. This is one of my favourites from the session, although there are two or three more I may post in the next couple of days.

Bower Woods Triptych

Filed under: Documentary, Hi Res, Ice, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, Winter — collin orthner @ 8:36 pm

For anyone following my blog, sorry for a repost of the middle image. I really think it works well though as such a simple and clean image that contrasts with the  messy complexity of the other two framing it. Woods are like that, at least around here. There is some effort involved in cleaning up the “mess” in the viewfinder while looking for an image that holds together compositionally. The two outside images could stand on their own for me, but likely not for many viewers who will probably find the complexity too confusing and unappealing. As a triptych though, they tell a more complete story of the Bower Woods and most of my viewers will enjoy this to a much greater extent. I tend to enjoy looking for hidden patterns and lines etc to pull a very complex scene into something that feels coherent, and I understand that I am in a small minority too! No problem, as I am really out in the woods for myself and making images that allow me to explore my surroundings fully even when they may seem chaotic at first glance. I also enjoy looking at abstract art and many people have no time whatsoever for it and that’s OK. Not everyone enjoys the same things. The world would be a far more boring place if it were so!

All About Lines

Filed under: Abstract, Black & White, Hi Res, Ice, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, Winter — collin orthner @ 7:19 pm

As I mentioned yesterday I am posting another image using thoughtful composition. Not that I don’t think about my images when I am out, but just that some images seem to require a bit more attention to details than others. This one required a lot of very small movements to get my camera in just the right spot getting all the branches just where I wanted them. My goal was to eliminate as many branches crossing over any others in the middle of the image. I count 7 close calls. The major crossovers I don’t mind as they add some contrast to those that aren’t crossing anything. The light was very dull, so there is virtually no detail to speak of in the snow and besides this image is all about the lines, not texture!
