Movement in the Forest

Filed under: Abstract, Hi Res, Movement, Nature, Sigma DP3 Merrill, Sigma DP3M, Trees — collin j örthner @ 10:58 pm

We have had an abundance of strong wind over the last couple of weeks. Springtime in Alberta I guess. I dropped Laura and our friend Arlee off at yoga this evening and went to Bower Woods yet again to see one of my favourite areas to walk through and photograph. Well, the wind was still busy blowing up a storm so it was pretty difficult to make any images without some movement. I decided to accentuate the idea of movement and added my own! It’s a fun technique and only takes a bit of practise, mostly to arrive at a shutter speed that will achieve the look you are after and the correct style of movement as well. After a few different tries you can usually come up with a satisfactory look. I decided on a vertical to accentuate the tree trunks and indeed had to try a few shots before I got the light coming through at the top the way I wanted.

Big Boys

Filed under: Black & White, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP3 Merrill, Sigma DP3M, snow, Trees, Winter — collin j örthner @ 8:56 pm

I found this group of big cottonwoods last week driving around Red Deer County. The snow had been driven almost sideways and stuck to anything it ran into.

Just Right of Centre

Filed under: Abstract, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP3 Merrill, Sigma DP3M, Trees — collin j örthner @ 12:26 am

Many times nature appears to be very chaotic, and yet when one pays close attention to details, certain patterns, shapes and trends start to appear. Where are these branches seeming to be pointing to?

Enough of Winter, Let’s move on to Spring.

Filed under: Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP3 Merrill, Sigma DP3M, Trees — collin j örthner @ 11:06 pm

OK, it’s spring. We hit 17ºC today, and it felt subtropical. I walked to work this morning in beautiful conditions. A couple degrees above zero with absolutely no wind. I had my camera with me(big surprise) and made a few images along the way. The colour palette in spring consists of many beautiful and subtle tones, and thanks to a few leaves hanging on from last fall I a bit of more saturated colours as well.

Hoar Frost

Filed under: Abstract, Ice, Nature, Panorama, Panoramic, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, Winter — collin j örthner @ 10:09 pm

Hoar frost lines the branches of a large elm? tree in downtown Red Deer. Not sure about the elm, but it’s my best guess.

Bower Woods 4²

Filed under: Abstract, Nature, Sigma DP3 Merrill, Sigma DP3M, snow, Square, Trees, Water — collin j örthner @ 9:39 pm

Laura went to yoga this evening, so I decided to make my way into Bower Woods along a few familiar trails. I took with me a Sigma DP3 Merrill camera and for what ever reason I was seeing things as squares, so I have decided to post some of them here as a small series. The spring colours are quite laid back and subtle. Listening to the robins singing and Piper Creek gurgling with spring runoff made for a very pleasant walk. I even met some friends going for their evening walk with their dog and had a nice chat. There were a lot of people out tonight along the trails, some walking their dogs, some jogging, and some riding bikes. Finally, finally, spring is in the air.

This post is a 6 month (+ 1 day) anniversary celebration of the first snowfall of autumn 2012 (October 20th) in Edmonton. Congratulations to all in our capital city! I made this image yesterday morning here in Red Deer County.

One of my first images using my Polaroid SX-70 and some Impossible Project film. I really love the look this film has!
