Sweet CG!!

Immediately south of Red Deer looking straight west at 9:51pm MST, Aug.28th, 2013.

I was about to give up on this little storm. A fair bit of lightning, but I kept missing the strikes, or I might only capture a bit of one. It had appeared to be over with no further strikes, but I kept thinking maybe one more, and kept at it. This was literally the last strike from the storm. So thankful to get to witness this awesome power and capturing an image like this is a huge bonus!

  1. What an amazing capture! Would you mind to share your set up for such kind of images?

    • Thanks for visiting my blog, and I’m glad you like the image! Simple setup with the Sigma DP3 Merrill(with a RRS L-bracket which is really for a Canon G10, I just found they work great on the Merrill cameras) placed vertically on a tripod (Promaster T525P with a Joby Ballhead X). I was using the camera set to 100ISO, F5 or so, and 20 second time exposures in manual mode. I simply aimed the camera at the last place I saw a strike and kept making exposures until I was successful.Hope this helps and let me know if you have any furthe questions.

      • Thank you so much for such complete set of instructions. It sounds like patience is a necesary virtue here! What about focus? Were you at infinity or rather you focused somewhere?

      • Infinity, if I had focused any closer I am way too close!! Patience is absolutely necessary. I was out after another storm two days later and got nothing. Well actually, I had my Zero Image pinhole and a close strike landed almost straight in front of my camera. That’ll be my first pinhole image of lightning. Can’t wait to see the film! Stay tuned.
