Dark Journey

A new series of abstract images which I am titling “Dark Journey” starts with the two images below. So far I have maybe 10 or 12 images in this series which I will be posting. These are photographic images in a style quite foreign even to me and unlike the majority of my previous work up to now. I have  enjoyed working on this series  and we’ll see how far I go with it.

Comet Lovejoy

Filed under: Documentary, E-M5, Ice, m4/3, Nature, Night, Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm, Skyscape, snow, Stars — collin j örthner @ 8:08 am

I went out a couple nights ago in the hopes of seeing Comet Lovejoy before it starts to get to faint to see. I couldn’t see it, but had a pretty good idea where to look more intensely and to point my camera in it’s direction. I made a few images zoomed in, but really it is just a smudge in the sky and so decided to make a wide-angle view of the sky over Red Deer County tonight as well. You can easily see Sirius, Orion and the Pleiades, and there, just to the right of the Pleiades, is Comet Lovejoy, a small green smudge.

Closing In

Filed under: Abstract, Black & White, E-M5, Ice, m4/3, Nature, Panasonic 100-300mm, snow, Travel, Water, Winter — collin j örthner @ 10:32 pm

As the temperature drops, the ice covering Cripple Creek along the Alberta Forestry Trunk Road closes in and soon will be completely frozen over. I happened to come across this small opening, which is likely closed in now for the duration of winter and is hiding the rushing water from the frigid air only inches above. It will be months before the warm spring’s sunbeams causes the ice to melt and the water to accept the sun’s warmth again.

Wild Horses

Filed under: E-M5, m4/3, Mammals, Nature, Panasonic 100-300mm, Travel, Winter — collin j örthner @ 9:28 pm

I spent this past Monday travelling Alberta’s forestry Trunk Road with my friend Gary. We started southwest of Sundre where the Red Deer River crosses the Trunk Road. From there we headed north. Our goal all along was to try and spot a Great Grey Owl. We failed miserably at the task, but we were fortunate to come across a few of the wild horses to be seen along the Trunk Road. I had never seen these horses before, so it was a real treat for me, and I managed a few images of them. This one is my favourite.
