While co-leading a photo excursion in Banff and Yoho National Parks, our group made a stop at the Natural Bridge just a few kilometres from Field B.C. We spent a fair bit of time wandering below the falls photographing the many variations of the fast moving water as it tumbles over rocks on it’s way to the Pacific Ocean.

Day Dawns

Filed under: E-M5, m4/3, Nature, Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm, Skyscape, snow, Trees, Winter — collin orthner @ 3:03 pm

Sunday morning I was up early, so instead of waking everyone in the house up banging cupboard doors in a feeble attempt at getting coffee ready, I decided to catch breakfast at McDonald’s (I know!) Coffee was good though. I headed out of town in the dark and was out near Sylvan Lake somewhere as the sun was coming up. There was some beautiful fog in the small valley I was in which made for some very moody images. I wish I could put thee moments into slow motion and let them drag out for an hour. But, no that’s not how creation works. The earth goes round and round and sunrise doesn’t last long.

March Morning

I wandered around Red Deer County south of town for a bit this morning as it has been so cold and I haven’t been out for quite awhile. It was good to practice seeing again, not that I really stop anytime, but to go out with the full intention of giving my eyes a workout was great.

Non-Iconic

Filed under: Abstract, E-M5, m4/3, Movement, Nature, Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm, Travel, Trees, Water, Wind — collin orthner @ 8:25 pm

Heading up to Morraine Lake at 2:30 am is not exactly the  thing I was thinking about snuggled in my bed, especially considering my head didn’t hit the pillow until 12:30 am. But, two hours of sleep is certainly better than none and so myself and a few other photographers I was helping lead around Banff National Park in June, hit the highway. Sunrise was about 5:30 and after the nicest colour was gone I lingered a bit and instead of the iconic shot of Morraine Lake that appeared on our old $20 bills, I instead saw a beautiful abstraction presented by the reflections of the mountains in the lake. I zoomed in as close as I could and fired off many, many images as the breezes ruffled up the surface.

First day of fall in Red Deer County

Filed under: Agriculture, Autumn, E-M5, Hand of Man, m4/3, Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm, Travel, Vehicles — collin orthner @ 9:15 pm

A gorgeous morning to usher in fall this year in central Alberta. Took a short drive down C&E Trail and across through Penhold. In fact Penhold is somewhere in the fog in this image made from a few kilometres to the west of town looking east.

A Really Big Tree

Filed under: Black & White, E-M5, m4/3, Nature, Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm, Panorama, Panoramic, Travel, Trees — collin orthner @ 7:39 pm

I made this image of a very large cedar tree in B.C. this past July. I stitched four images together vertically to get maximum detail instead of cropping a single image. You will need to scroll to see it all.
