Morning Walk in Bower Woods

Filed under: Autumn, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP2 Quattro, Trees, W2W — collin j örthner @ 8:48 pm

Almost every morning I have my wife drop me off so that I can get a 20-30 minute walk to work through the Bower Woods. I know many people are tired of tree images, but I can’t help myself. I love the forms of trees especially in fall when there is still a bit of colour before all the leaves are gone and I can see how the branches trace their paths next to each other so much easier when many of the leaves have dropped. These were from a short stint along the edge of the woods along the path I walk along I was late today so didn’t have much time to work. i posted this poem about 6 years ago on this blog, but I keep it as one of my favourites and felt like posting it again:

You shall ask
What good are dead leaves
And I will tell you
they nourish the sore earth
You shall ask
What reason is there for winter
And I will tell you
To bring about new leaves
You shall ask
Why are the leaves so green
And I will tell you
Because they are rich with life
You shall ask
Why must summer end
And I will tell you
So that the leaves can die

September’s Green

Filed under: Autumn, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, W2W — collin j örthner @ 3:59 pm

This image goes back into September last year. Only because I haven’t been out much lately to get new work, I decided to go back through some of my early work with the Sigma DP2 Merrill camera. “September’s Green” comes from my second day with the new camera. I was walking to work and didn’t even take a tripod(So bad!). There is only a tiny bit of camera movement as I was very conscious of my breathing and finger pressure on the shutter release. There were so many different shades of green, just before the first fall frosts hastened the change to yellows, reds, and oranges.

Clear Indications of Undercutting

Filed under: Autumn, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, W2W — collin j örthner @ 11:09 pm

Piper Creek is but a small creek most of the year, virtually frozen solid in winter. Springtime, however, is a different story. There will be a two week period during spring when the warm temperatures first hit the prairies in a sustained manner melting the majority of our accumulated snow rather quickly. Sometimes this is accompanied by rain as well. Needless to say, tiny Piper Creek comes becomes a roaring torrent as deep as 3-4 meters and flowing very quickly. This massive rush of water causes havoc with the banks along the creek and inevitably trees get undercut and fall. A few of the trees in this image will make it to next spring now that the ground has frozen, but next spring may find some of these regal oldies lying on the forest floor or bridging the creek.

A fresh bit of snow adds some brightness to this dark corner of the coulee a few weeks back.

Winds of Change

Filed under: Autumn, Hi Res, Movement, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, W2W, Wind — collin j örthner @ 9:06 pm

Strong gusts of wind a couple days back brought with it snow and cold as fall turns into an early winter. I really hope the snow goes away again until December 21st or so, as that’s when winter should start, not in the first half of fall!

A Tree Fell In The Forest

Filed under: Abstract, Autumn, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, W2W, Winter — collin j örthner @ 6:52 pm

It was a very quiet walk through Bower Woods this morning. We had a light snow flurry with the temperature hovering around 0°C. I met nobody on the trail this morning. It’s nice having the whole park to myself. I came across this large poplar tree that had been felled by a strong gust of wind. The skiff of snow seemed like it was glowing in the dim light giving a very ethereal feel to the scene.

At Rest

Filed under: Abstract, Autumn, Hi Res, Nature, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Sigma DP2M, Trees, W2W — collin j örthner @ 8:20 pm

Autumn is certainly a time of change, but it is also a time of rest. These leaves which burst forth with the first warm rays of the sun in spring, rapidly grew from tiny buds into amazing different shapes. Then they waved like mad when the big thunderstorms of summer blew through. Almost never have they sat perfectly still as the air almost always has had some small breeze creating a current. Now, however things have changed. The leaves make one last trip as they flutter to the ground and come to rest silently, gathering frost with a whole community of others. I have added below a crop from this image showing off the amazing capabilities of this little camera. The crop is a detail of a print that is 50″ across!!

I don’t think it’s summer anymore Toto!

Things have got just a might chilly over the last few days. Is it too early to start thinking about spring??

Misty morning in Bower Woods

Filed under: Abstract, Autumn, E-M5, m4/3, Nature, Panasonic X 12-35mm f/2.8, Square, Trees, W2W — collin j örthner @ 7:42 am

A beautiful morning for a walk through Bower Woods in Red Deer. A bit of mist had formed which softened the view a bit and made for some fabulous views.
